About 50meals.com

In 2007, KevCheng will go to 50 new restaurants. He’ll eat, take pictures, and write short reviews.
He’ll try to tell you what to get, what not to get, and who you should take along.

There’s also this whole thing about, oh, you know, finding hard core deviant food, self-discovery, being a creative photographer, the meaning of life — whatever, don’t worry about that. Just enjoy the pictures of the food, and when you visit the restaurants, tell ‘em you found ‘em through 50meals.com.

A lot of people ask about the camera equipment. It’s a FujiFilm S5 Pro with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 digital lens. Occasionally supplimented with a Nikon SP-800 flash.

About KevCheng

KevCheng was born in Taiwan and came to America when he was young enough so as to not have a fobby accent, but old enough to know Chinese food tastes GOOD. His parents were public servants who liked to road trip on weekends, giving him a nice head start on different kinds of food. He took up photography in college and started taking pictures of what he ate when he got his new FujiFilm S3 Pro. He has since then switch to the new Fuji S5 Pro and is LOVING the new camera.

KevCheng likes what he calls “hard-core deviant” food. Food that doesn’t take 82 steps to prepare, food that knows what it is and sticks to its role, food that sometimes takes some arm twisting for his Americanized friends to eat. Examples include steamed crabs, sashimi, grilled chicken butts, spicy Chinese hotpots, Korean Barbecue, and unusually large burgers. Kevin also particularly likes curry, barbecue, violent sea creatures, and most anything on a stick or sold from a cart. For his 50 meals project, he is looking for new and unusual places to eat, and since KevCheng is on a semi-permanent low-carb diet, you’ll see that reflected in his food choices as well.

Kevin is now a regular contributor to LAist.com. Look for his food reviews about once a week.
