My cousin Rose who lives in Michigan came down to SoCal for a visit and was staying in San Diego for the weekend, so we met them in sunny San Diego for lunch. The question of where to eat came up, of course, and a quick search through Yelp for their well-reviewed seafood restaurants brought us here to the Bay Park Fish Company.

It’s a pretty nice place with the restaurant taking up a majority of the location. The smaller half of the building is a fish market. The menu has two tiers — there’s the daily menu, which is the regular stuff that’s available everyday — I’m gonna have to call it the “value menu,” which are your regular restaurant fare: fish tacos, mussels, crab cakes, etc. And then there’s the specials menu, where the fresh catches of the day are listed, this is the crazier stuff that you’ll see, and the prices will reflect that.

We start off with some crab cakes. These were pretty big and they didn’t skimp on the crabs. Not bad at all.

Mussels. I’m a huge mussels fan and the sauce they had were excellent. This was also a very good deal, I remember this was about $7 or $8.

Ceviche. This is a great pile of seafood that’s not cooked, but marinaded in a citrus sauce and “cooked” that way. Loaded with shrimp and fish and scallops and topped with avocado, this was a great entree that was also a lot of fun to eat. It’sa little on the salty side but I loved it.

Deep Fried Whole Rockfish - I specifically asked for the head to be left on. This was nicely deep fried and it’s a 1.3 pound fish, the amount of meat on the fish was decent, the fish was fresh and I loved how dramatic this whole thing looked. Next time I’m really going to go for a bigger fish.

The famous Fish Tacos. These were very good, good sized and the fish was fresh and very tasty. We ordered a couple of varieties of this and although it didn’t stand out as being spectacular, it was a good choice and a fairly good deal at $8.

The bill came out to be surprisingly cheap - only $60 for the five of us. Service is pleasant and I especially liked how it’s not touristy at all. Order the fish tacos and definitely try the mussels, the deep fried rockfish is good but there are probably better things on the menu for you to try. Give it a go next time you’re in town.
