Announcements: The business cards are still here for you to grab so you can hand them out to friends and also at any of the restaurants you go visit because of this website. The idea is that if enough people show up with a 50meals card, we can work out discounts with the restaurants. E-mail me at KevCheng (at) 50meals (dot) com
And you can also join the 50meals FaceBook group!
I’ve been busy bringing sexy back to Chinese food for a while, and you’ll see a big entry coming up next week, but this week I’m gonna go back and show some love to my Korean foodie friends and their food!
Tahoe Galbi is a little step above your normal all you can eat place, their specialize in the essential Korean Barbecue item, galbi. It’s a nice, gig place, with high ceilings that helps with the ventilation.
This is a different panchan, it’s muk. made from konjac, I think it’s called 竘篛 in Chinese. Nice texture, very subtle flavor.
Big salad, of course.
They weren’t kidding about it being about the galbi here.
It’s tender and juicy, the marinade is slightly sweeter than other places, definitely one of the better galbis I’ve had. And for $16.99, it’s all you can eat. Sure Soot Bul Jeep has THE GALBI to beat, but then it’s like $20 a plate there and I could probably eat 2 by myself…
The panchan falls a bit short with nothing really spectacular, but this hot soup was nice.
Tongue. Very important. Must. Have. Tongue.
They cut the tongue a little thicker here, it seems, and it’s chewy and full of that extra meaty / gamey flavor.
Can’t forget the bacon, of course, but here it’s just your standard fare.
This is definitely the place for all you can eat galbi, the atmosphere is nicer than most and it’s definitely not as loud as Manna and not as smoky as Soot Bul Gui Rim 2 or Soot Bul Jeep. I’m starting to become a little pickier about my meat and panchan though, and nothing other than the galbi here really went the extra mile to distinguish itself. I’d say it’s a good place to bring someone new to KBBQ, as it’s a nice place and the service was pretty good. For more hard core eaters of KBBQ, though, we’ve covered better places here on 50meals. Namely Toad house for bacon, Soot Bul Jeep if you got deep pockets. and Soot Bul Gui Rim 2 will always have a special place in my heart.
Now, I don’t want to leave you hanging with just a mediocre meal for the week, so I’ll have one more post coming up later this week. We’re gonna venture outside of asian food to mix things up a bit.
