This place came highly recommended. Actually, when I saw Eric’s photos back in November 2006, I was set on going. Peter Luger’s Steakhouse has been around since 1887 and it shows. It sits in an old brick building and it feels like you stepped back into a black and white photograph when you sit down at the table. The waiters know what they’re doing, they might seem a bit curt but ours, Eli, was really cool and we had a lot of fun chatting with him.
This whole wall was adorned with Zagat plaques. It’s been rated one of the top steakhouses for decades.
The steak sauce tastes just like shrimp cocktail sauce. It actually went pretty well with the steak, but it’s not quite anything spectacular.
The bread they serve are actually pretty good, I tried to eat very little of it but just could not resist.
The place looks like a 19th century beer hall.
Cousin Annie ordered a salad for us. Nothing spectacular but was useful in getting us ready for the carnage to come.
We ordered a couple of Porterhouses, essentially steak for 4 to split amongst the five of us. The steak is ridiculously huge and comes on a tremendously large and hot plate. Meat too raw? Put it on the rim and let it cook some more. The server placed a couple pieces in each of our plates and drizzled some of the grease on top.
Do yourself a favor, don’t order anything above a medium. They don’t make it, but our waiter was very kind and took some pieces back in to be cooked further.
Tender, hearty, excellent dry aged meat cooked to a perfect medium.
It’s a pretty fat piece of steak. Juicy and well made. The method wasn’t anything fancy, though, and I do like it better with their steak sauce. It might not be the best tasting piece of meat ever, but I do appreciate it for being so traditional in its approach, and it’s certainly hard core.
I couldn’t resist grabbing the bone and tearing some meat off of it. Meat off the bone is delicuous.
Oh, you’ve GOT to try the cheesecake. It’s excellent, and their whipped cream is incredible, it just disappears in your mouth and leaves this rich aroma, not greasy, it’s like eating tasty air.
Peter Luger’s is definitely not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. You can easily average $40 to $50 a person. It’s well worth the experience, though, and it’s definitely hard core deviant American food. People recommended their bacon, but I thought it was just okay, (meal #7, Toad house in LA’s K-town has GREAT bacon.) Bring 5 or 6 friends, order up some medium steaks, and remember to leave some room for that great cheeesecake! This place gets CROWDED, so make reservations a week or two ahead of time.
Big Thanks to Cousin Willie for this special meal, and to Cuz Anne for somehow getting us that 9:45pm reservation at the last minute.
