Per Ms. Charlyn and Dan’s recommendations, I hit Hide Sushi this week. Hide is known for its fresh fish and good prices. It sits on Sawtelle row in West LA and is a small charming little restaurant that frequently sports a long line.

It’s not all that often that I get to try a new authentic sushi place, Sushi Gen has cornered my market for so long. So I thought, what the heck, I gotta try some of their crazy stuff… so I got a little carried away…

The Sea Urchin is excellent, fresh, with an extraordinary buttery and rich flavor. This was the best Sea Urchin I’ve had. It’s kind of an acquired taste, but I say it’s much easier and enjoyable to eat if it’s fresh like this.

The Toro (Fatty Tuna Belly) is pale pink because of its extremely high fat content. This thing melts in your mouth and leaves a rich tuna flavor. Goodness gracious this was good, but it’s SO fat that I can’t eat more than just these two pieces, it leaves me thinking about it, though…

I had to try the Yellowtail Sashimi, this wasn’t as good as the Yellowtail at Sushi Gen, which wows me consistently, but was still quite decent.

One of the special items here is Monk Fish Liver, they sure pile it on fast and high. This was actually pretty good, just a slight hint of liver taste and texture.

I had to try a Dynamite, which is scallops and clams baked with mayonaise and mushrooms. This was quite good as well, I consider it comfort food.

Here is the Scallop roll and Yellow Tail roll, both good value and excellent choices, I particularly like the scallop roll’s flavor, as the Yellowtail here lags behind Sushi Gen’s.

Hide is known to have a long line sometimes, I showed up at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and didn’t really have to wait, the quality of fish is well above average, the Sea Urchin being the star of the meal. The rolls are excellent and I’m told the dinner combos are very good deals. The service is friendly and reasonably attentive, the restaurant is clean if a bit stuffy as it takes a beating from the setting sun. I’d still hit Sushi Gen more since it feels a bit nicer, plus Sushi Gen somehow always nails the Yellowtail for me. If you feel like having Sea Urchin, though, you gotta come here for ‘em.
